Pennsylvania Academy of Music Explores "The Russian School"

The Pennsylvania Academy of Music's piano department will explore the “Russian School” of piano music in a lecture/masterclass on Saturday, May 5 beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Academy's Binns Room, 313 West Liberty Street, Suite 210, Lancaster. The event is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

The morning will begin with a lecture on composers of the Russian School, a symphonic type of virtuosic piano music whose notable composers are Prokofiev, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. After the lecture, Academy piano students will play pieces from the Russian School and faculty members will offer critiques in the masterclass setting.

Xun Pan, the head of the Academy's piano department, says that the Russian School of piano music offers pianists the opportunity to explore “so many textures, so many voices” through “technically challenging” compositions.

The Pennsylvania Academy of Music is a non-profit pre-collegiate institution dedicated to the musical advancement of its students.
