Ernesto Tamayo, Classical Guitarist, In Concert

TamayoThe romantic sounds of classical guitar are on the bill at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music's next Twilight Concert Series program. Ernesto Tamayo, Academy faculty member and classical guitarist, will be the featured artist at the Friday, January 5, 2007 program that begins at 8:00 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, Duke and Orange Streets in Lancaster. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for non-Academy students and can be reserved by calling 717.399.9733.

Born in Cuba, Tamayo began his guitar studies at the age of five, studying at first with his father. He eventually went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees from Havana University and a graduate performance diploma from the Peabody Institute. He was First Prize winner of the 1995 USA National Guitar Concerto Competition and has toured extensively throughout North and South America and Europe, performing and conducting master classes.

Tamayo's debut at Carnegie Hall with a solo recital was a sold-out performance for the Artists International Series. He has presented solo recitals at the Oregon Bach Festival, in Chicago's Dame Myra Hess Series, and for the Sixth International Guitar Festival, among others. The Washington Post has called Tamayo, “One of the world's excellent classical guitarists...with fluent technique and expressive versatility.” His CD, “The Cuban Guitarist,” was chosen to compete in 13 Grammy categories, and his most recent CD, “Classical Persuasions,” will include works by Weiss, Sor, Brouwer, Borges, Canonigos, Lauro, Albeniz and Rodrigo.

Tamayo is a recipient of career development grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Bossak/Heilbron Foundation. He joined the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of Music in 1997.
